Generation 1 (Drivechips)

Gen 1 chip use a simple microcontroller and attach to the DVD drive controller chip within the console by way of 3 or 4 wires that make up a virtual serial port. They work by simply fooling the DVD drive into thinking that content on recordable media is actually on original media. Aside from the fact that backups will not work unless they are perfect copies of the original this chip generation has the shortcoming of being incompatible with the D2C DVD drive controller chip found in newer Wii consoles.

Generation 1.1 (Drivechips)

This generation is a slightly more advanced version of the Gen 1 chips for the Wii. The difference is in its communication method with the DVD drive controller chip. Gen 1.1 chips typically use an FPGA rather than a microcontroller and use anywhere from 10 to 30 wires for installation. The major advantage of Gen 1.1 chips is that they are much more robust in their hacking method meaning that they are not susceptible to many of the smaller bugs that plague Gen 1 chips and they are also compatible with newer Wii consoles that have D2C DVD drive controller chips.
