TSOP (Xbox)

TSOP stands for "Tiny Small Operating Package". In the Xbox console this chip (located on the motherboard) is used to hold the BIOS which determines how the system may operate.

A softmodded console will boot up off whatever BIOS is stored in the TSOP, and then load a patched version into memory (usually one that enables the ability to boot unsigned code or game backups).

modchips are extra ICs that can be added to your motherboard that, when enabled, cause the system to use the BIOS they hold instead of the version stored in the TSOP.

Pre-1.6 consoles have flashable TSOPs, meaning you can replace the held BIOS with a modified copy - However, in order to execute the flashing software you must first install a softmod. Most systems can hold a 256kb BIOS in their TSOP though pre-1.2 consoles have a respectable 1mb worth of space. A system with a flashed TSOP will function in a similar manner to that of a modchipped console. Certain points on the motherboard must be joined in order to make the chip writable.

Note that even if a given BIOS fits in a given TSOP, it might still only be compatible with a modchip. Locate the documentation for that BIOS and READ it before attempting a flash to ensure compatibility! It is very nearly impossible to repair an incorrectly flashed Xbox without the permanent installation of a modchip.

Versions

There are quite a few different TSOP chips used in Xbox systems. A certain console version does not always ensure a certain TSOP version.

  • AMD
  • FUJITSU
  • Hynix
  • ST
  • SST
  • Winbond

List likely incomplete. Also, images of each would be nice...
