Remote (Xbox)

The Xbox Remote came with a special dongle which could be plugged into any of the four controller sockets on the front of the console. Unless one is attached, it is impossible to play video DVDs using the Microsoft Dashboard. As the remote was typically not included with consoles (it was instead an optional extra), and technically speaking the Xbox was completely capable of playing video DVDs without one, this limitation was considered something of a rip off by many consumers.

XBMC can also take advantage of the remote attachment, however it allows users to play videos regardless of whether one is connected or not.
