MS Dash (Xbox)

From Wiki-Scene

Jump to: navigation, search

The Microsoft Dashboard is the "operating system" included with all unmodified Xboxs. It refuses to load from anywhere other then the root of the C partition.

As dashboards go it is fairly limited, but as the only "official" dash out there this is to be expected - Typically the first thing a user will do after installing a mod is to install a different dashboard (the process of softmod installation usually does this for them). All softmods rely on certain versions of this dash in order to function.

Features

This is all off the top of my head, will need a full/accurate guide here later.

  • Memory Management
Allows you to manage save games, ripped music CDs, and memory cards. Be warned! If you have a supported USB drive attached to your system that is supported by the MS Dash, entering the memory screen will wipe it without warning (and then inform you afterwards)!
  • Music
Allows you to play music CDs and copy their contents to the system's hard drive. Has a (rather limited) system in place for renaming tracks.
  • Settings
Lets you change such things as the video resolution and IP address of the console.
Note that PAL systems cannot change to HD display modes. An Enigmah-X PAL-NTSC Video Selector disc can be used to switch from PAL to NTSC and back if need be.
Setting up your IP settings here does not allow you to connect to a system running the MS Dash via FTP (Xbox). You must use a custom dashboard for that.

Versions

There have been a number of different versions of the MS Dash released, and not all softmods are compatible with any given build. I can only remember one of them...

  • 5960
The final release. A copy of this version is included with Slayers.

Updating

Many Xbox Live compatible game discs can be used to upgrade your MS Dash. Halo 2 and all Live enabled games released afterwards will install the latest version. If your softmodded Xbox boots up to an error 13 or 21, updating the dashboard will return it to it's unmodded state. On this basis you should be careful NOT to do this if you do not want to ruin your working softmod.

Simply insert the game disc, allow the game to start (you may need to reboot the console if an error screen has appeared) then attempt to enter Xbox Live. You do not need an active internet connection or a Live account.

This author is unsure as to whether the console needs to be connected into a network for the game disc to install the update, or what prompting is given to the user. I'm also aware that a softmodded system can safely be used on Live, but is unsure how to stop this updating system from damaging the mod.
