Dashboard (Xbox)

A Dashboard is an Xbox program designed for use as an "operating system". Typically they allow for organisational functions such as save game management, FTP services, and provide an easy way to start/backup software from/to the console's hard drive.

"Your" dashboard is whatever the console first loads when you turn it on (assuming there is no game disc in the drive). Typically this program will be along the lines of that mentioned above, but technically there's nothing stopping you from setting ANY piece of Xbox software as your "dashboard" (for example, you could install Halo to the hard drive and have the system start that on boot up).

There is quite a large variety of "proper" dashboards to choose from.

The dashboard present on all unmodified systems, this offers DVD playback capabilities (with a remote attached) and various console settings. As the only official dashboard produced by Microsoft, it was never designed with console modders in mind and so it's the only one this author knows of not to provide FTP services.
A small and simplistic dashboard. It can be used to help backup your system's EEPROM data or flash your TSOP/modchip. Included with most softmod autoinstallers.
Appears very similar to the MS Dash, but is far more functional. Has the ability to automatically backup game discs to your hard drive. Included with most softmod autoinstallers.
Can be used alongside Qwix to provide a special burst FTP mode (which greatly increases the speed of multiple small file transfers).
By far the most well supported/updated/feature functional dashboard available, XBMC is also one of the best media playing packages around - Whether for the Xbox or otherwise. Unlike EvoX/UnleashX it is fairly large and so most softmod autoinstallers do not include it.
